Steps to Take During an Emergency

General Life Saving Information

  • Call 911 to report any injuries or medical emergencies.
  • Study emergency "shelter/evacuation" maps located in hallways or classrooms.
  • Remain calm, and walk - DO NOT RUN.
  • Faculty - stay with your students. Be prepared to account for your students.
  • When evacuating - lock classrooms or offices behind you.
  • Life safety is more important than property - take only what you can gather immediately.

Fire Alarms

  • Leave the building immediately.
  • DO NOT use elevators.
  • Persons with disabilities - go to stairway landings and wait for rescue personnel.
  • Stay together as a group, and walk - DO NOT RUN.
  • Keep at least 100' from the building and from emergency vehicles.
  • Stay outside until police or fire personnel have given an "All Clear".

Lock-Down

  • Lock-Down announcements are given over the building PA system (if available) or by staff.
  • Stay in classroom or office.
  • Immediately lock classroom or office doors.
  • Turn off lights.
  • If possible, stay out of sight of windows and doors.
  • Stay put until police officers give an all clear.

Power Outage

  • Stay in classroom or office for 10 minutes.
  • After 10 minutes and power is not restored, evacuate the building.
  • Stay together as a group, and walk - DO NOT RUN.
  • Keep at least 100' from building and from emergency vehicles.
  • Life safety is more important than property - take only what you can gather immediately.
  • Call 911 to report any injuries or medical emergencies.

Total Campus Evacuation

  • Remain calm, and walk - DO NOT RUN.
  • Faculty - account for all students leaving your authority.
  • Exit building and go to your vehicle.
  • Exercise patience when leaving parking areas.
  • Follow evacuation route instructions given by police or fire personnel.
