Here’s your chance to be a part of the MacZero experience! There’s still time to apply to enroll in AEET175 – Planning for Sustainable Construction. This course provides students the opportunity to actively participate in the construction of the MacZero house on Mackinaw Island OR greening the UofM Biological Station in Pellston OR designing an energy efficient community for LCC’s West Campus. A team of Lansing Community College students from five different academic programs has won the BuildUP! Building a Brighter Michigan Competition, earning the right to help construct their energy-efficient home design among the historic homes on the west side of Mackinac Island, not far from the Grand Hotel, and earning themselves $10,000 in scholarship money.
The 16-member team, called Mac Zero, competed against teams from Central Michigan University, Eastern Michigan University, Michigan State University,
Oakland Community College, and the University of Michigan in designing a home meant to display the powerful combination of energy efficiency and the best in home design.
Combining Style and Efficiency
The winning design is a 3,075 square foot Victorian style home that blends traditional design with net zero energy efficiency, meaning the home will produce as much energy as it consumes. The home is projected to earn a LEED Platinum certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
The team’s intent was to prove that energy efficiency can be incorporated into any style of home without sacrificing attractiveness.
The Next Step
The next step for the team is to work with competition organizers to raise the $600,000 cost of construction. They will work with Meadowlark Builders of Ann Arbor.
