Social Bookmarking

Have you ever wanted to share articles from research databases with classmates and or your instructor? Or to bookmark an article to get back to later? Social bookmarking websites allow you to save links to articles to access from any computer with internet access.

Using Social Bookmarking for Research Papers

  • Get back to your article to refer to later or share articles with classmates who are writing about a similar topic.
  • Create a working bibliography where you can add notes or highlight sections of an article.

Step 1: Find the Right URL

Unfortunately, linking to an article is not as easy as copying the URL from the browser's address bar. Each research database provides a different way to establish durable, long lasting links to articles called persistent URLs (PURLS).

Below are instructions for finding the PURL in some popular databases:

Academic OneFile and General OneFile (Gale) - Click on Bookmark (star icon in tool box near top right corner of article) or Document URL (at bottom of screen). Or use the Share icon share icon to automatically add the article to a social bookmarking site.

ProQuest Central - Click on Copy link (top of article)

Issues and Controversies (Facts on File) - Click on Record URL (bottom of article)

CINAHL (Ebscohost) - Click on Permalink (bottom of article)

Step 2: Check for the Off-Campus Access Prefix

If you create a link to an article from off-campus, it will automatically include the prefix needed to allow off-campus access for library patrons.

If you create a link to an article from on-campus, you must manually add the prefix, https://envoy.lcc.edu/login?url=, to allow for off-campus access with a TUID and Password:

Sample PURL with Off-campus Prefix

https://envoy.lcc.edu/login?url=http://find.galegroup.com/gtx/
infomark.do?&contentSet=IAC-Documents&type=retrieve&tabID=T002&prodId=ITOF&docId=A224406834
&source=gale&srcprod=ITOF&userGroupName=lom_lansingcc&version=1.0

Step 3: Add the Link to Your Social Bookmarking Site

After you have checked to make sure the off-campus prefix is part of the URL, add the link to your social bookmarking site, such as Delicious or Diigo.
