Notification to Students and Staff: Armed Robbery Reported by Resident – March 5, 2012

Last evening, March 5, 2012, at approximately 5:45 p.m. a female (Lansing resident) reported that she was attacked while sitting at the CATA bus stop located at Shiawassee and Washington.

The victim said she was struck from behind by an unknown female who appeared to have an object in her hand, which the victim assumed was some sort of cutting instrument. The victim said the unknown female then physically assaulted her. While she was trying to fight off the alleged perpetrator, two more unknown females began assaulting her as well. One of the unknown females stole the victim's cell phone out of her pocket.

As described by the victim, the suspects were identified as follows:

Suspect #1: Black, female, dark skin color, 17-18 years old, between 5'6" and 5'7", with a medium build and short black hair. She was wearing a purple shirt under an Apple Bottom gold and white colored jacket that was unzipped, and "skinny" dark blue jeans. This subject was the one who initiated the physical assault and was reported to have an object in her left hand during the assault.

Suspect #2: Black, female, dark skin color, 17-18 years old, with a medium build and shoulder length hair pulled into a pony tail. The subject was wearing a green short-sleeved polo type shirt.

Suspect #3: Black, female, fair skin color, 17-18 years old, with a thick build, and shoulder length hair pulled into a pony tail. The suspect was wearing a blue and red short-sleeved shirt and baggie style pants.

The victim called the Lansing Police Department (LPD) when she arrived at home, and LPD asked the LCC police to handle the matter.

Assaults like this are not common on or near LCC's campus but students and staff should be cautious when moving about, especially in the evening when it is dark.

Tips for staying safe:

  • Be aware of your surroundings at all times. Keep your eyes and ears open.
  • Trust your instincts and gut feelings.
  • Park and walk in well-traveled, well-lit areas.
  • Walk to your car in groups, if possible.
  • If you are uncomfortable, call LCC Police at 483-1800 for an escort.
  • Carry a cell phone. If you are being bothered or followed, call 911. If you don’t have a cell phone, ask a passerby to call 911 for you or go to the nearest emergency phone box. (See map of locations, http://www.lcc.edu/police/emergency_call_box/.)
  • Ask LCC Police for a safety whistle to carry. The whistles are available to LCC students and employees and are intended to be used ONLY in emergency situations where there are no means of escape and you cannot get to a phone to call 911. If you hear someone blow a whistle, call 911 immediately. Furthermore, if you see anything suspicious, dial 911.
