Business & Community – Tico Duckett

President, Tico Duckett Distributing

I used to play football in the NFL. Now I’m a family man, a businessman, and a community man. I believe in giving back to my community, and one of the ways I’ve tried to do that is by promoting LCC and taking part in fundraising events (the LCC Foundation’s annual Lip Sync program is my favorite).

I know about and can see directly what LCC does for the community. The West Campus/MTEC Center alone is an extraordinary asset to this area. And it’s just one example of the ties the college maintains with business and industry in order to provide the training needed in this area. There are many business owners in this town who like me went to LCC’s Small Business Technology Development Center to help them get started. I chose to be a business owner but had no background. I learned about business plans, long-range planning, banks, lawyers, accounting…I got a tailored education on the infrastructure of and how to run a business. It helped me tremendously.

LCC is exactly what the name says – it’s a college of the community. There are people in the Greater Lansing area and beyond whose lives have been molded there – high school students who go there after graduation, people out of school for any number of years who go to LCC to improve their lives, workers who want to upgrade their skills…. People of all ages, ethnic backgrounds, and interests go to LCC. It’s there for real people wanting to get a real education and entering the real work world….that’s as simple as I can put it.
