The Science and Mathematics Education Center (SMEC) offers area school districts and K-12 teachers assistance in the alignment and implementation of their science & mathematics curricula in accordance with the State of Michigan Science and Mathematics Grade Level Content Expectations (GLCEs).

K-12 Teacher In-service:

  • Promotes science and mathematics literacy for all students by offering professional development for K-12 teachers in effective teaching, learning and assessment strategies.
  • Encourages meaningful integration of core content and technology in instruction.
  • Supports the implementation of inquiry-based process-oriented teaching and learning strategies in science and mathematics.

District Curriculum Partnering:

  • Assists school districts in the assessment, alignment & implementation of science and mathematics curricula.
  • Offers on-site professional development workshops and in-services designed to meet the articulated needs of educators.
  • Provides consultant services to school districts in the planning of the scope and sequence of their mathematics and science curricula, assuring alignment with the Michigan GLCEs.
  • Assists school districts and buildings in planning for the effective implementation of science and mathematics expectations and assists in the design of professional development opportunities in support of the curriculum.
  • Disseminates national and state standards-based teaching & assessment strategies and curriculum materials.
  • Facilitates the building of a community of learners.

Science and Mathematics Programming for Youth:

  • Science and Mathematics Challenges

A week-long summer program for accelerated learners in science and mathematics who will be entering 5th and 6th grades in the fall.

Sessions are taught by LCC faculty.

  • STEM Challenges - Science Technology Engineering Mathematics

A week-long summer program in Robotics, Computer Programming and Nanotechnology exploration for students entering 6th, 7th, & 8th grades in the fall.

Sessions are taught by LCC faculty.
