Science & Math Elementary Exploration for Grades K-6
November 10, 2012
The Science and Math Elementary Exploration (SMEE) is the new name for the Elementary Science Olympiad. It was held in the Arts and Science Building and the Gannon Building on LCC's main campus on November 10, 2012, from 8:30 am to noon.
SMEE is open to all elementary age children in the tri-county area: Clinton, Eaton, and Ingham.
SMEE is a day for the children of LCC's community to come to the campus and experience hands-on science and math activities. All events are non-competitive with an emphasis on learning. We offer activities ranging from eye dissection to making and learning about spirals. Faculty and students (elementary education majors) will be running the day's events.
SMEE is very rewarding, fun and exciting for students, parents, and teachers. Students can choose from many activities, focusing on math and all science disciplines. Parents are welcome as chaperones to help their children fully explore the science and math ideas presented. Teachers have used this event as a means of involving parents in their children's education. Many teachers use some of the events as classroom activities to support their science curriculum or as individual science projects. Everyone who attends SMEE goes home with new found information and hopefully a love of science and math.
Students decide which events they would like to do. Most of our participants find it difficult to attend all events, since there are so many to choose from. We offer chemistry and biology demonstrations along with exciting planetarium programs. So, as you see there are many things to be learned.
How to Register
Pre-registration for the Science and Math Elementary Exploration event will begin in October 2012.
You may register your children on the day of the event, at the Arts & Sciences Building first-floor lobby.
The fee for each child is $3 with accompanying adults free.
Same day registrants should plan on arriving by 8:00 a.m. and stand in the "walk-in" registration line (Arts & Sciences Building, lobby area.)
We will try very hard to move the line quickly from the lobby to the individual events! We appreciate your patience, and welcome you to our campus!
