LCC's 2012 Black History Month to include many exciting events

Feb. 1 - Kickoff Celebration, 6 to 8 p.m., Dart Auditorium. Come join Lansing Community College for Black History Month 2012. There will be local recording artists, including Ieesha On'trel, LaNette Hester and Onnette Mitchell, as well as poetry readings, a step-show, a keynote address and more.
Feb. 7 - Jazz with Tia Imani Hanna, 5:10 p.m. in Dart Auditorium. Jazz artist Tia Imana Hanna will conduct a scat singing workshop and demo. Then at 7:30 p.m. in Dart Auditorium, Tia will perform with the LCC Faculty Jazz Quartet. If you love jazz and want to hear some great music, Tia will perform for the listening pleasure of LCC students and the community.
Feb. 8 - Seventh Annual Health Fair, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., second floor lobby of the Gannon Building. Healthcare is an issue that is not only central to African-Americans but all individuals within our community. That is why Lansing Community College is pleased to host this health fair. Every Tuesday in February - Soul Food Lunches, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Kennedy Cafe, second floor of Arts & Sciences Building: The Lansing Community College Black History Month Committee and Aramark Campus Dining have teamed up again this year to provide a soul-food experience to the LCC community. Each Tuesday there will be a different soul food entree for purchase at a special price in the Kennedy Cafe.
Every Friday in February - Hip-Hop Poetry Sessions, noon to 1 p.m., Feb. 3 and 24 in the Herrmann Conference Sunroom (HCC); and Feb. 10 and 17 in Arts & Sciences Building room 375. Led by LCC Adjunct Professor Dr. David Guard, these sessions offer discussions about hip-hop and poetry and the effect that both have on African-Americans and the community. Individuals will be allowed to bring their poetry and share. Bring a lunch, bring a friend! For more information contact Dr. Guard at guardd@lcc.edu.
Feb. 6, 15, 22 and 27 - Movie Festival, Abel Sykes Technology & Learning Center (TLC), Room 127. Movies will be shown and moderated by Dr. Willie Davis Jr., LCC adjunct faculty. This festival is a way to give individuals from all races a better perspective of Africans and links with Africa and the African Diaspora, both in the past and present. Feb. 28 - Closing Celebration, 6 to 8 p.m., Dart Auditorium. Join the Lansing Community College community as we conclude Black History Month with singing, dancing, poetry reading, a step-show performance and much more.

'Start here - Get there' offers visits to universities
Are you thinking of transferring to a university after attending Lansing Community College? Participate in the "Start here - Get There" visitation program. This is your chance to learn more about the campus life and atmosphere at the university you are interested in attending. Participants meet at LCC and take a bus to a university. There they receive a personal tour, learn about admissions and enjoy lunch on campus. To register for any of these tours, contact the Student Life Office in Gannon Building 230 during normal business hours (M-F 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) A $5 deposit is required to hold a space. For more information, call Student Life at 517-483-1285.
Upcoming visitation days are as follows:
Western Michigan University: Feb. 3, 2012 (Snow date: Feb. 10) - Participants are to meet in the entrance of the Gannon Building at the circle drive on Grand Avenue at 9:15 a.m. The bus will return to LCC at approximately 4 p.m.
Central Michigan University: Feb. 17, 2012 - Participants are to meet in the entrance of the Gannon Building at the circle drive on Grand Avenue at 9:15 a.m. The bus will return to LCC at approximately 4 p.m.
Michigan State University: Friday, April 27, 2012 -Participants are to meet in the entrance of the Gannon Building at the circle drive on Grand Avenue at 8:30 a.m. The bus will return to LCC at approximately 2 p.m.
Student Advisory Committee to the President meetings slated
The LCC Student Advisory Committee to the President will meet on the following Wednesdays throughout the 2012 spring semester: Jan. 10, March 21, April 18 and May 16. LCC President Brent Knight is tentatively scheduled to attend each of these meetings to gather opinions from students about various topics. The meetings take place in TLC room 127 from 2 to 4 p.m. All students are welcome. For more information or to add an agenda item, contact Student Life at at 483-1285.
