LANSING COMMUNITY COLLEGE STUDENT AND ACADEMIC SUPPORT DIVISION
Job Title: Peer Tutor
Status: Part-time Student Employment
Job Summary: Provide instructional and academic support to students who are enrolled in a variety of LCC courses and have applied for tutorial assistance. This is accomplished through content area and study skills tutorials, and referrals to other support services on campus.
Reports to: Tutorial Services Coordinator
Works with: LCC employees and students
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Provide tutorial assistance
to students: Conduct informal intake and
diagnosis; Assist students with defining academic success and monitor
progress; Meet punctually with students for all scheduled appointments,
individually and in small groups for content area tutoring and study
skill development; Encourage student participation in tutoring through
reminders of appointments during tutoring sessions, and with phone calls
and notes, as needed; Maintain contacts with instructors in applicable
departments as necessary; Maintain accurate
records of student attendance and participation.
2. Refer students
to other avenues of support; Develop and maintain contacts with
instructors, counselors, advisors, and other services on campus, e.g.
Career Exploration and Development, Women's Resource Center, Counseling
and Advising Center; Refer students to other sources as needed;
Document referrals on attendance form.
3. Participate in Tutorial
Services in-services and training: Attend bi-weekly in-services;
Actively participate in presentations and discussions.
4. Participate in
committees as necessary.
5. Other tasks as assigned by Tutorial Services
Coordinator.

Job Title: Supplemental Instruction
Leader
Status: Part-time
Job Summary: Provides instructional and academic support to students who are enrolled in specified sections of LCC courses through structured study groups. This is accomplished through content area and study skills study groups, and referrals to other support services on campus.
Reports to: Tutorial
Services Coordinator
Works with: LCC employees and
students
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
1.
Be a positive role model for other students: Model critical
thinking skills; Model effective note taking strategies; Model
active listening and appropriate, effective questioning; Demonstrate
the process of identifying key concepts of class content;
Demonstrate the use of various strategies in learning class content;
Demonstrate effective use of textbooks, supplementary materials and
campus facilities important to class content; Share helpful hints on test preparation and test taking
to increase student skill and reduce anxiety; Demonstrate effective
use of post-exam information to improve future test performance;
Encourage student participation in class; Encourage a positive,
active approach to learning and problem-solving; Encourage and
model preparation for class sessions.
2. Facilitate student
learning within designated study sessions; Encourage student
participation in study sessions through reminders of appointments
during class, distribution of flyers, and with phone calls and
notes, as needed; Conduct SI sessions as agreed upon by instructor
and Tutorial Services; Prepare for each session with supervisor and
instructor; Employ a variety of groups leadership techniques to
encourage participation in Supplemental Instruction sessions; Encourage
interaction between students with class materials, rather than re-teach;
Redirect students to the instructor when the group needs additional
instruction on class content; Maintain contacts with instructors in
applicable departments as necessary; Maintain
accurate records of student attendance and participation.

Center, Counseling and Advising Center; Refer students to other

prearranged agreement with instructor and Tutorial Services.

Job Title: Tutor Technician
Status: Part-time, Faculty Contract
Job Summary: Tutor technicians provide instructional and academic support to students who are enrolled in a variety of LCC courses and have applied for tutorial assistance. This is accomplished through content area and study skills tutorials, and referrals to other support services on campus.
Reports to: Tutorial Services Coordinator
Works with: LCC employees and students
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

handouts and/or computer generated materials; Develop a
plan for implementation of materials.

other avenues of support; Develop and maintain contacts with
instructors, counselors, advisors, and other services on campus,
e.g. Career Exploration and Development, Women's Resource Center,
Counseling and Advising Center; Refer students to other sources as
needed; Document referrals on application forms.
4.
Participate in Tutorial Services in-services and training: Attend
bi-weekly in-services; Present information related to content area
tutoring and study skills; Participate in professional development
activities.
5. Participate in Tutorial Services Work Groups:
Attend work group meetings; Actively participate in implementing
work group's role.
6. Participate in committees as necessary.
7.
Other tasks as assigned by Tutorial Services Coordinator.
